A registered nurse enters the United States through an I – 140 visa or a US green card. While the process can be lengthy (up to 24 months), the wait is well worth it. Once the process is complete, the nurse and family are legal and permanent United States immigrants. Unlike a work visa which is temporary and can be revoked, the I -140 visa is permanent and does not limit the immigrant. Unless there are unique conditions, attempting to enter the United States as a registered nurse under any other visa is both risky and more than likely illegal. Many recruiting firms and hospital systems have been severely penalized for attempting to bring registered nurses into the United States through methods other than the I -140.
